I think your friend may have infected toenails maybe cause by a fungus.

Gross fungus. There are some medications available through the doctor's. Years ago my mom had a couple of nasty thick green toenails and the doctor removed them. When they grew back, they were fine! Cut the nails down so they arent long. Buy anti-fungal and anti-bacterial creams( from CVS or Rite-Aid type stores). Possible try to wear less sneakers and closed shes, possible sandals so that there isnt a chance of facilitation an environment for bacterium or fungi to grow

If your doctor don't know, try another one because if your doctor don't know, how would we know?
50/50 mixture of vinegar and Listerine
